Southern Talent

From the hills of Southern Carolina is one of the top potential bodybuilders seen in years. Malcolm Simmons is a 24 year old PT who has competed locally but is bumping up his game and training for MM America in Las Vegas. At 5'10", 200 lbs., this guy's got an incredible physique- symmetrical, thick and lean. Malcolm played high school football and other sports, but only got into bodybuilding over the past couple of years.

Get Into Shape, Please!

Just a new back shot of MM HW Adrain Childers is enough to give pause why this guy has not won before. At 6'3", 265 lbs., he is in amazing shape and just a few weeks from competing condition . . . that's IF he decides to compete. Every time he gets ready for competition, Adrain looks big, thick, ripped and crazy a couple of weeks out.  Then, when he gets to the show, he looses his mass and looks like he never trained for the show. Really, if this guy ever gets that diet down, there no one who's going to stop him.  Adrain needs to step on stage again and show everyone why he is a dominating force among natural bodybuilders.

Carbs for Competition

Bodybuilders continually strive to "eat clean" during pre-contest dieting to have a lean physique. Each athlete's body is different, so the dietary needs will vary. Some athletes can get away with eating a Fiber One bar or banana each day. On the other hand, others won't eat as much as an apple for fear of not being lean, or because of carbohydrate sensitivities and dietary restrictions.

Pre-contest diets are restrictive, but there are several complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and oats which are staples. Each is easy to prepare in advance, and also low on the Glycemic Index (GI). Although there is some skepticism about the use of low GI foods to lean out, the majority of bodybuilders choose these foods over high glycemic carbohydrates.

Brown Rice

Unlike white rice, the nutritional value of brown rice is not reduced from the milling process. Only the hull is removed, which is the outer most layer. Brown rice is full of vitamins such as manganese, selenium and magnesium, and low in cholesterol and sodium. Oats, Oats, Oats

Oats are a complex carbohydrate that bodybuilders often eat. There are different forms of oats, with the most common as oat meal, oat bran and oat bran cereals such as Cheerios. Do be careful when eating oats though. Specific brands dictate if the oats are gluten free or not. This is dangerous if you have gluten allergies or gluten sensitivities.

Quinoa

Although quinoa is a "new" grain, it was used many years ago by the Incas. There is some argument that quinoa is not a whole grain, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers it one. When cooked it has a full, fluffy texture with a contrast of crunchiness. Although it's a grain, it also serves as a complete protein because it has all nine essential amino acids.

Quinoa is also found in different colors. Golden is the most common, but red, black orange, pink and purple shades are found in specialty stores. There is a small difference between the taste and texture, as well as a small difference in the nutritional value.

Sweet potato

These bright orange to purple tubers are easy to cook and store. As a complex carbohydrate, sweet potatoes offer health benefits with beta-carotene, fiber, Vitamin C and other antioxidants. It is also a great natural anti-inflammatory. Bodybuilders commonly suffer from aching joints because of the dietary restrictions and heavy weightlifting, so this is one carbohydrate you should not exclude from your diet.

Beans

Black, kidney, peas and lentils are good sources of complex carbohydrates. When added to a carbohydrate such as brown rice, beans create a high protein, clean meal.

Jungle Gym

New Yorker Maik Wiedenbach was on vacation when by chance came upon what can only be described as a true Jungle Gym. Here's the story in his own words.

"My wife and I had the pleasure to spent the last 8 days in Costa Rica and I have to say the country is breathtaking. It offers every conceivable form of vegetation, landscapes from mountains to sandy beaches as well as a plethora of animals. So we spent 2 days hiking and five days on the beach. But as a true muscle head, I had to work out. Every morning I would use my resistance band for rows, deads, curls and military presses which was sufficient for a decent pump and to annoy my wife.

Then, during a jungle beach walk, I found this wooden contraption: a makeshift gym with a dip bar, pull ups and some barbells with wooden plates. I couldn't resist and simply had to use it (as everybody knows pull ups and dips are the original muscle beach workout). In short, it was great! Pumping outdoors with the Pacific Ocean as a background! It also goes to show that bodybuilding is truly a global sport and you can pursue it anywhere. So train hard."

Maik will be competing at MM New York on October 29, so come by and see him on stage and in action.

Big Mo Dot Com

Big Mo Mendez will be making a guest appearance at MM Britain, Sep 4 in London. The reigning MM Universe Pro Champion will also host a training seminar with fellow MM Pro Ulisses who already lives in London.  Back home in Connecticut, MM Pro Morris Mendez is hiding out and training 100% for his next show and guest appearances at MM Britain in London and MM New York. The 5'10", 215 lbs. just keeps improving his classic symmetry and incredible muscle quality.

Model America Champion Kyle Clarke will host the ESPN Fitness America Weekend in November.
